A unique period bed, originating from Scotland, a Highland crofter's 3/4 size those days a standard size, cosy...
Very chunky and solid sycamore timber, turned by a bodger from green wood in the woods.
The date is early, 1840 onwards, the size pointing to that era too.
The bed is made symetrically, ie the headboard and footboard are of equal height, the sides corresponding to the same height along the base, as this bed had a rope base, strung between the many little knobs attached to the frame.
Fortunately, modern wooden slats will just slot inbetween those knobs to make a solid base for the bed.
The turnings on this bed are quite lovely, the whole bed fixed together with massive
bolts, hidden behind round buttons, which can be popped out to tighten or dismantle.
The bed was painted a good while ago, it is not recent paint, has a satin eggshell finish, the colour a muted sage green / grey hue.
This bed, like most beds, will dismantle into 4 components and is easy to assemble with the original steel fittings. It has been marked to facilitate assembly with ease.
