antique pine farmhouse box settle bench with storage 1870

Item Ref

A fine example of an good quality European pine box settle, dating from around 1870.
Built in time honoured traditional style, heavy and sturdy, tenon jointed and additionally pegged. ( photos 11 and 12).
The settle comes in it's original green country colour, with charming, very primitive floral decoration on front panel and mid back, it has not been stripped or repainted.
Hence, the finish is quite rustic, well used and worn, the kind of look that cannot be replicated.
The bench retains the original internal divisions, escutcheon and lock, but sorry no key.
A well fitting lid, gently swept arms, turned spindle shaped supports in dove grey and a pretty undulating back rest add to the country feel.
The inside of the storage box is clean, the floor mildly worn with marks of usage during a century and a half of use. The back floor board has been replaced with antique timber.
There are some repairs to the back legs, a common repair with these settles and new pads have been added all round to protect the feet. ( last photo)
A truly charming genuine piece of country pine, ready to use.
