antique rustic painted farmhouse box settle bench 1890

Item Ref

A rural plainly styled and well constructed farmhouse box settle / bench with storage.
Often part of a dowry to store linen and at times to accommodate visitors and children.
Traditionally styled, as found from Scandinavia to Southern Europe, with beautifully swept arms and solid panels all round.
Found in the original first paint, a rich dark red scrumble, now overpainted in a Gustavian style medium grey, left in a chalky matt finish, with the red under tones showing through.
This settle has been thoroughly cleaned inside and out, ready to use.
The lidded seat offers a large stow space, the lid sitting well, the lock is missing and the two (!) escutcheons have been left to show the change of time..
