Description

A very special pine dowry chest, found in beautifully worn original paint, Northern Europe.
Built in customary way, heavily moulded top with iron strap hinges, the 2 top painted panels just visible.
Chunky dove tailed construction, standing on a slim plinth and peculiar little red feet.
Several painted panels on the front, divided by half turnings, depicting time faded bouquets and florals framed in a multitude of geometric patterns.
The date 1869 and 'ANNO', in the year, dating the chest.
The colours are vibrant and strong, just time worn.
The painting is folk art and most striking, abstract rather than whimsical.
A hand forged iron escutcheon hides the large keyhole, leading to a castle style lock.
Inside a lidded candle box and a very clean interior.
We have more detailed photos of the interior, but are focusing on the exquisite exterior.
A decorative and useful pine trunk or storage box, a focal point in any space.
Dimensions:
1170mm wide
590mm deep
600mm high
