Description

A very ancient pine dowry chest, found in beautifully worn original muted paint, Northern Europe.
Built in customary way, heavily moulded top with iron strap hinges, 3 painted panels beautifully decorated.
Chunky dove tailed construction, standing on a deep and impressive plinth and carved feet.
The painted panels on the front, depicting time faded bouquets and florals on a most appealling pale terracotta base. Background hues of dragon blood, ochre and pale blue, shining through.
The middle panel bears the date, a marriage celebrated in 1856 and 3 initials, J,C and D.
The large keyhole, leading to a castle style snap lock. Impressive also the hand forged iron key, see photo 12 and 14.
A strong box indeed!
Inside a lidded candle box and a very clean interior. No damage or repairs.
A decorative and useful pine trunk or storage box, a focal point in any space.
