antique pine dowry chest blanket box original paint 1799

Item Ref

Decorated pine boxes are rarely found in original condition, hence the delight in finding this.
Originating from the Continent, very likely Northern German or Scandinavia and decorated for the celebration of a marriage, hence called dowry chests.
The style of decoration can be found all over Europe from Scandinavia to Hungary, typically floral designs, as in this case, a single wild tulip depicted in 4 panels around the chest.
The painting is delicate, vinegar painted, spider web designs, swirls and squiggles, frame in a frame, really lovely. Colour scheme muted creams and pale blue, highlights of the tulip still quite vivid.
The condition of the box is good, there are signs of wear, especially on the top, where the painted finish has been worn to the mellow pine as one would expect after years of use.
A faint line of writing is visible on the very bottom of the chest, just above the deep baroquesque plinth, the numbers 1 7 9 9!!
The trunk has original hinges, shield escutcheon and lock, but sorry, no key.
Noteable the adzed back boards, see last photo.
