vintage swiss army folding spade

Item Ref

A well balanced and crafted spade, made for the cavalry units of the Swiss mountain army.
Made from ash and forged steel in traditional Swiss precision , it also comes with a beautifully tactile and matured leather sheath.
The eight-sided chamfered ash shaft feeds seamlessly into a conical ferrule which in turn ends in the screw-fit folding mechanism. The spade-blade is rivetted to a plate which is hinged to either fold or be fixed firmly.
All moving parts are in perfect condtion. The spade itself has signs of wear on the very front edge which is to be expected, otherwise the original dark grey is still visible.
The dark brown leather sheath is hand made, stitched and rivetted and sports leather straps to fasten the spade to horse or belt. All of the sheaths are in good condition, signs of wear and tear though not to be avoided in this line of work!
Each of these spades (we have a few) was allocated to a particular Swiss man, so the leather sheath bears a name, the occupation, a place name, the year of service ( ranging from 1948 to 1969 ) and most importantly the Swiss Cross. Almost all of our spades were issued to the sadlers of the unit, either French or German speakers. We believe these tools were used to dig out of snow, avalanches or to dig in for protection in adverse weather conditions.
A versatile and useful tool for todays sport enthusiast, ie. trekking, camping, cross-country activities, four wheel driving, rallying, mountaineering etc.
Also a handy foldable tool to keep in any vehicle for emergency situations .
Or just simply a beautiful, unusual and useful gift for the "boy" / "girl" who has everything !!!!!!!!!
